Underwater Naturalist
Course Overview
The PADI Underwater Naturalist Course is designed to give the recreational diver a greater understanding of the marine environment and a broader awareness of the relationships between marine organisms.
Prerequisites
- Open Water Diver certification
Course Structure
Classroom topics will cover basic concepts of marine ecology in the Arabian Gulf and Oman. You will learn appropriate diving habits for observing and interacting with marine life and their habitat. 3 Open water dives will combine practising these diving concepts and conducting basic underwater surveys.
Topics include the following:
- Introduction to the aquatic realm, divers and their environment, general ecology of marine ecosystems
- Survey of aquatic life and relationships between aquatic animals, animal identification techniques
- Aquatic life mythology and human perception, responsible human interaction, discussion
(Recommended texts: PADI Encyclopedia, Reef Fish, Reef Coral and Reef Creature Identification and Marine Life of Qatar).
The 3 Open Water Dives focus on the following:
- The identification and observation of marine species from several groups, identification and observation of marine relationships and interactions
- Survey of community structure and relationship of different marine habits
- Night dive - comparison of day and night differences in community structure and observation of marine species
