A Dive master is the first leadership level in the PADI progression.

This rating denotes an individual who:

  • Has a high level of personal diving skill
  • Possesses instructor level knowledge of diving theory
  • Has had significant training in how to assist an instructor during training activities
  • Is able to assume a role of responsibility for the welfare of other divers in his/her charge

Duties Of A PADI Divemaster

  • Assist a teaching status PADI Instructor in confined water and open water training of divers
  • Supervise training and nontraining-related activities by planning, organizing and directing dives
  • Independently guide Open Water Diver course students on the tour portion of training dives 2 through 4 at a ratio of 2 students per certified divemaster
  • Conduct the subsequent dives for PADI Discover Scuba Diving participants after they have completed the first dive with an instructor
  • Conduct the Discover Local Diving
  • Generally supervise both training and non-training related activities by planning, organising, and directing dives
  • Independently teach the PADI Snorkeling Course
  • Conduct the Scuba Review program for certified divers

Prerequisites

  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent)
  • PADI Rescue Diver certification (or equivalent)
  • An approved medical exam form for a medical examination conducted within the past year. The form signed by a licensed physician and stating that the candidate is fit for diving
  • CPR and First Aid certified (within 2 years)
  • 40 Logged dives by the start of the course
  • 60 Logged dives by the end of the course
  • Minimum age: 18 years old

Note: A CPR and first Aid course can be made available at an additional cost

Course Structure

To fulfill these training objectives, the PADI Divemaster course consists of three modules:

  1. Knowledge development
  2. Watermanship and pool skills
  3. Practical application/internship

Divemaster Performance Requirements

  • Complete all knowledge development segments including Knowledge Reviews in the PADI Divemaster manual or through the Divemaster elearning course, and pass the Divemaster Final Exam
  • Complete and turn in an Emergency Assistance Plan
  • Complete and turn in an Underwater Map
  • Complete the skills and stamina module with a combined score of at least 12 points
    • 400 metre/yard swim
    • 15 minutes treading water (last 2 minutes hands out of water)
    • 800 metre/yard snorkel swim
    • 100 metre/yard inert diver tow (both divers in full scuba gear)
    • Equipment exchange while buddy breathing
  • Complete a diver rescue assessment
  • Complete waterskills exercises
  • Complete the dive skills workshop and assessment
  • Complete practical application skills
  • Conduct a simulated or actual Divemaster Conducted Program (lead dive)
  • Intern one complete Open Water scuba class - classroom, pool, and four ocean dives
  • Intern one dive in a continuing education program
  • Meet the professionalism criteria

Equipment

Student to provide: PADI Open Water Manual with Recreational Dive Planner and eRDP, PADI Advanced Manual, PADI Rescue Manual with Accident Management Work Slate, PADI Divemaster Manual, Instructor Manual, Instructor Slates, PADI Encyclopedia, Diving Knowledge Workbook, Log Book, and the PADI Divemaster processing fee. The Divemaster video is recommended but not required.
